Well done to Cheltenham for dispelling the recent gloom and putting on an excellent card today. Friday's appetiser was very interesting and today's fare is almost up to Festival standard. It is worth noting that the ground appeared to ride good but perhaps the most salient factor will be how many horse's training regimes have been held up by the arctic weather? For what it's worth, I reckon those from the West Country, with top class facilities should have an edge (e.g. Nicholls, Pipe and Hobbs).
The main betting race is the Vote AP Gold Cup (aka Mackeson/ Massey Ferguson??) which as ever, looks very open. I liked the way Matuhi battled behind a well handicapped Aigle D'or last time and he looks to offer a bit of value. I will also be keeping an eye on the novice, Robinson Collonges, who should come on greatly for the experience. The relocated Tingle Creek sees Master Minded back in action. It's difficult to oppose him (bearing in mind, his talent) but I expect a big race from Somersby who should be staying on well up the hill.
The super card also includes two graded hurdle races. In the International (or Bula), three rising stars take each other on in a race surprisingly lacking an established Champion Hurdle contender. At the weights, Menorah should win but Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti are extremely promising and it is notable, that they are being pitched at this level early in their careers. The Relkeel looks tailor made for old friend Sentry Duty, but it is a hot race and better value may be had on Carlito Brigante.
To further whet the appetite, two festival ante post favourites, Sam Winner and Time for Rupert put their credentials on the line. Neither can be opposed!
All in all a cracking day's sport to enjoy and greatly looking forward to an afternoon on the couch with laptop and RUK.
good luck...
