Hennessy 2009

The Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury today sees Denman attempting to repeat his stirring deed of 2007. The sight of him thundering to victory off top weight brought tears to the eye of many seasoned fans and remains long in the memory. However it is doubtful that he will be able to reprise that performance following his well documented woes against a better field. The trends suggest that the winner is usually an up and coming second season chaser, but this looks open to scrutiny this year as they appear a moderate bunch. Barbers Shop looks the best of these and may indeed go off favourite despite stamina doubts. Nevertheless it is always very competitive and with reports from Paul Nicholls suggesting that all is well with Denman, he may turn out to be a value bet at 6s or higher, if drifting late. It is also worthwhile noting that the Hennessy often turns up a long priced winner and An Accordion is worth considering as an interesting long shot.

The other major race of the day is the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle where Binocular takes on a field of Irish trained horses. Solwhit is the best of the these but the track should suit Nicky Henderson's charge. However very interested in seeing how Go Native runs. Horner Woods looks to have a good chance in the Rehearsal Chase with ground conditions suiting, while best bet of the day is at Fairyhouse, where Cockleshell Road has excellent track form on heavy going and looks nicely weighted.

good luck...
