Thoroughly enjoyed trip to Newmarket for Champions Day on Saturday. It was a first visit to the Rowley Mile and was very impressed with the atmosphere, layout and facilities. The course appeared to be in prime condition with a pretty lush covering of grass although as events progressed, it seemed that those drawn rail side were disadvantaged.
Twice Over following an astute piece of placing by Henry Cecil won the Champion Stakes in good style thwarting Mawatheeq's late challenge. Richard Hills objected but winner won on merit. Fame and Glory ran as predicted.
The Dewhurst was of more interest with Ballydoyle fielding 3 of the first four. Ryan Moore seemed to forsake his pacemaking duties and rousted Beethoven up to drive him home. Fencing Master looked a bit green while Xtension finished well without being pushed too hard. Pre-race selection Steinbeck seemed slightly hampered by being on rail and in the lead too soon. At mid point Murtagh was looking around unavailingly for cover. Nevertheless he ran on well to the line and to this eye remains of interest.
The remainder of card saw a very comfortable winner of the Ces, a Stoute hotpot turned over (rails again?) and an ultra cool ride from Christophe Lemaire.
cheers....
