Sea the Stars dispelled any doubts about his stamina, winning the Derby in imperious fashion. From the moment he flared his nostrils and shook his head in disdain at the modest pace being set, the result was never in doubt. Mick Kinane had an armchair ride before gently pressing the button to let this special colt stride out to a comfortable, almost nonchalant, victory. One may question Ballydoyle's tactics but it seemed from their paddock antics, they lacked conviction in their ability to land the spoils. It should be noted that is quite an achievement to have 4 finish in a pack behind an excellent winner and of those, Fame and Glory and Rip van Winkle should have their days in the future. However they will have to avoid Sea the Stars, who looks capable of landing the trio of 10 furlong tests at Sandown, York and Leopardstown. It should a be a great summer!!!
On friday, Sariska won the Oaks under a determined ride from Jamie Spencer. It is difficult to see why he was penalised considering the race's stature and it was good to see him ride a proper race rather than the usual daredevil efforts. Sariska looks a solid filly and should go on to have a rewarding season.
Good fortune followed us across the Atlantic with a winning bet on Summer Bird in the Belmont Stakes. The favourite went too soon and Coolmore had to settle for second place again. The Triple Crown races are always exciting and the Americans certainly know how to put on show.
Back across the pond for the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly. Selection, Feels Allright went off too fast and faded long before the denouement, where Le Harve under an excellent ride from Christophe Lemaire emerged victorious. A nice horse but doubt he will be keeping John Oxx awake at night.
cheers.....
