2,000 Guineas 09

An intriguing renewal with question marks hovering over all the leading contenders. With only Delegator having run so far, we are reliant on connections reports and opinions. It is difficult to see the winner coming from outside the top 6 in the betting so I am going to focus on those.

Delegator runs like a sprinter, probably needs a bit of cut and with 17 runners, Jamie Spencer will probably require a fortutious split (poor value at 3/1). Rip van Winkle shapes like a middle distance horse, albeit with loads of potential (also poor value). Mastercraftsman excelled on fast going at the Curragh last season and looks like a specialist miler. Only doubt is Murtagh's preference for Rip, but Pat Smullen is a very capable pilot and it is noteworthy that he gets ride rather than one of Ballydoyle crew. Gan amhras is notable for being pick of Bolger yard but again looks like he will be better over further. Any horse (Evasive) trained by Michael Stoute is worth considering but has been subject to too many negative reports. The going has obviously persuaded John Oxx to run Sea The Stars rather than my long term fancy, Arazan. He shaped well as a 2 year old and if suited by going has a decent chance.

In summary, I will plump for Mastercraftsman - should handle going, Group one form, nice price and appears to a proper miler. However a saver on Sea The Stars could be worthwhile today and for the future. Hopefully it will be a good race and establish strong form lines for forthcoming season.

Best of luck and allez les rouges.......
