One of the most striking stats in racing; one winner of National in the past 20 years has carried more than 11st. This year's renewal looks very open and with a compressed handicap, I am going against numbers and putting up State of Play as main hope. Showed his ability winning a Hennessy off similar weight, won a novice handicap well on track and appears to have been laid out. Offshore Account is also of interest although value diminished by Pricewise. Grade 1 winner as a novice, good jockey and stable showing a bit of form. It also worthwhile to have one from the lower end of the handicap and reckon Brooklyn Brownie who finished second in sefton is worth a small stake. However this is the Grand National and anything could happen.....
Celestial Halo looks vulnerable after his hard race at Cheltenham and would suggest two irish runners who did not go to the Cotswolds in March; Fiveforthree and Solwhit. Preference for latter (good form - beaten by Coral cup winner on second last outing and very impressive last time) and he is nap for day. It's a competitve race though and Whiteoak might be worth a second look. Going to have one last go on Three Mirrors in handicap chase, should be suited by longer trip but not really great value. Leading Contender is also worth a keeping an eye on.
The first 2 races look very competitive - no strong opinions but interested to see how Cape Tribulation and Tatenen fare after Festival experiences.
Have a good day.....
