Sizing Champion

Day 2 of the Festival and looking forward to Sizing Europe defending his title. In cracking form this season, it is difficult to see him failing, but nagging doubts about the going make "odds on" unappealing. Triple Grade 1 winner Realt Dubh could be interesting at an each way price, as the other main contenders carry serious negatives.

Simonsig has been diverted to the Neptune but doubtful he will prosper on the quicker going. Monksland has improved progressively throughout the season and has the ability to hand Noel Meade/Paul Carberry a change of fortune. Leopardstown victor Benefficient should not be lightly dismissed either in what appears a weakish but open renewal.

First Lieutenant was one of our "stars" from last year's festival and it seems everything has fallen into place for this classy horse. However, he has it all to do this afternoon against David Pipe's Grand Crus who was being seriously considered for the Gold Cup on Friday.

The Bumper generally falls to an Irish yard but as in the past two years, this season's crop look less than inspiring. Village Vic (unlucky last time) looks the best I have seen so far and he gets the nod.

To round off a smashing card we have two ultra competitive handicaps. Old pals Megastar and Act of Kalanisi are on suitable marks in the Coral Cup and have sporting chances. Alan King has a fine bunch of 4 year olds and his leading light Vendor is sure to be warm order, but at the prices and on sounder going, I prefer his stablemate, Ardlui who originates from very interesting sources.

best of luck...
