It's been a difficult betting week so far and with recouping opportunites limited, one's intentions are to enjoy Gold Cup Day (best day of the year!!). Expect Long Run to win the Blue Riband but his patchy form this season does not warrant a hefty bet at the short odds available. Kauto Star should do his thing but in a moderate renewal, it might pay to look for a capable outsider. Holding a long term ante post on Quel Esprit pushes me in that direction and at 16/1, an each way wager should give us a run for our money.
The Triumph confounds with nothing between the leading English and Irish contenders. Balder Succes, albeit Alan King's second string, comes somewhat from left field and following his visually impressive win at Ascot is a worth an interest in what should be a spectacle if nothing else
Boston Bob is the day's "Banker Bet" in the Albert Bartlett. Very impressive last time on unsuitable ground, he seemed set for the Neptune. For some reason he was diverted to this grinding test but his class should prevail.
The ramainder of the card is for punting and I am hopeful that either of Redera, Make a Track and Slieveardagh will give followers from the Emerald Isle something to shout home.
enjoy....
