The Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury is one of National Hunt's long standing dishes. A prestigious race in it's own right and also a serious indicator to future Jumping talent. This season's renewal is no less competitive but at this stage, looks to lack a real star. Nevertheless, a hard one to call!
Best horse in the race would be appear to be Planet of Sound who is not unfairly treated. However his unreliable jumping suggests he should be a longer price. Paddy Power winner, Great Endeavour's efforts to emulate his former stable star Celestial Gold are undermined by stamina doubts. Trends and stats direct one's attention to progressive second chasers, Aiteen Thirtythree, Wymott and Wayward Prince. All three ran in the RSA Chase with the latter faring best. They should run all well, but the prevailing ground conditions ought to favour Wayward Prince and it's not difficult to see him staying on at the finish after a hectic gallop. Others worth consdidering are long absentee Michel le Bon and at speculative odds, Irish challenger Muirhead, and the game Carruthers. While it's somewhat difficult to be confident, Ian Williams' charge should give us a run for our money in an open contest.
enjoy and watch out for Peddlers Cross at Bangor (12.10).....
