Cheltenham Day 1 - Champion Hurdle

It's March 16th and finally the talking stops and the action starts. The first big race is the Champion Hurdle which has a distinctly open look about it this year. Go Native's form entitles him to be favourite and I favour him over Solwhit whose preparation has been undermined by a reported illness. However any of the others can be a given a chance, including Won in the Dark who could be interesting each way bet.

The undoubted highlight will be Dunguib's bid for glory. The money is piling on as I write and having monitored his progress keenly, will be very surprised if he does not win. Paddy Power have a nice special offer, refunding stakes if he wins and would like to put forward General Miller as an alternative and outside bet.

The best race of the day is the Arkle Chase where Captain Cee Bee heads the market. He has excellent credentials but will find it difficult to beat a top class field. Somersby and Riverside Theatre have solid claims but I am sticking with Sizing Europe who was the best hurdler (while always jumping like a chaser), will enjoy the going and has the necessary speed for 2 miles. The biggest danger in a highly competitive field could well be Sports Line.

best of luck......
