2009 Flat Season Postscript

The 2009 flat season ended last night at Santa Anita with Coolmore/Ballydoyle retreating to Tipperary with their tails between their legs after yet another disappointing night. It was sad to see Rip Van Winkle floundering after featuring prominently early on. I doubt if it was the distance that found him out (an excuse proffered) but the effects of a long season on those feet. Ballydoyle's old failing of being slow away from the gates came back to haunt them as well. Both Beethoven and Mastercraftsman were always going to be vulnerable to misfortune after their slow starts. However, while one should not detract from Zenaytta's excellent victory, would she have beaten either Sea The Stars or Rachel Alexandra?? All in all, it was an entertaining evening! Pounced got us off to a great start on the punting front but alas, all went downhill subsequently with the rails, wide draw or injury (Zacinto) sabotaging selections chances. The European contingent exploited their advantage with 6 winners but it will be a different story next year back on dirt.

The Flat season on this side of the pond was set alight by Sea The Stars with his exploits the undoubted highlight. Compliments too for Ballydoyle for not shirking the challenge and the abiding image will be their squadron following Sea The Stars and Mick Kinane down the hill at Epsom. However they have plenty to look foward next season with St. Nicholas Abbey, Jan Vermeer and Steinbeck. Other 2yos to note are Awzaan, Aracano, Rosanara and Sagacious.

cheers....
