The Charlie Hall at Wetherby is generally the first major chase of the season but this year's renewal looks substandard perhaps due to the proximity of newer races at Down Royal and Haydock and the quick going. Nevertheless it's a poor turnout for a decent purse!! The rest of the card looks equally uninteresting and one wonders why such an opportunity for a good card on a Saturday is forsaken. Ascot looks marginally better with Philips Hobbs' promising novice, Cockney Trucker debuting over fences. The feature race (Union House Chase) looks competitive, with the Nicholls/Ruby runner Just Amazing a nice price to improve again. Old friend Alsadaa has it all to do off top weight in the hurdle but does run well here and will like the going.
The best race of the day is undoubtedly at Naas where crack novices from last season, Forpadydeplasterer and Trafford Lad return. Neither may win today but are both worth keeping an eye on, along with River Liane who makes his first appearance over fences in a beginners chase.
enjoy...
